Tiger Tiger / Burning All Night

The Tiger

William Blake / 1757–1827

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?

And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water’d heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Telling Thoughts

As someone who has been an admirer of Tiger Woods, as a great player, as a fearless competitor and as an ambassador for the game of golf, I am appalled to see that he appears to think that by adopting a foetal position under the bedsheets, that somehow interest around the world would wane without knowing what actually took place  in the hours prior to him crashing his car into a fire hydrant and tree in front of his house in Florida, at 2.25am on the morning in question.

With Tiger having suffered facial injuries, and there is confusion about the cause of some of  the marks, people are curious as to the circumstances which first drove him to leave his house, about the manner of his departure and about where he could possibly have been going at such an hour.

Also clouded in doubt, is the claim by Wood’s wife Elin, that she used a golf club to break open a car window to rescue him from the vehicle. This seems a little too convenient. Particularly as a photo of the crashed vehicle shows the passenger side back seat window as having been broken, but not the driver’s side front window, the one nearest the driver. The wife’s explanation seems incredible. However her husband (reportedly unconscious at the time) Eldrick (Tiger) Woods,  does support her version of events. Another convenient response it would seem.  Are they hiding something? Is it a conspiracy of mutual convenience? And if so, why?.

Delaying Tactics

It is days after the fateful event and Tiger has still not provided a credible answer. At this point he continues to avoid being interviewed by the Police even though charges are being considered.  You have to ask why he persists with this behaviour? To make matters worse, Tiger commenting via his website today said that he will not now travel to California to host his own golf tournament, the Chevron World Challenge in Thousand Oaks. Canceling, means he will now avoid the media blitz which would have turned a planned  pre – tournament press conference into an internationally televised inquisition about the whole messy affair. The prospect would have horrified his sponsors. Woods also announced that he has canceled all of his playing commitments for the rest of 2009.

“Tiger, without you coming clean once and for all about what actually happened, what are people to make of this?”

His Biggest Test

Tiger must know that you can hide for a while, but not forever. Such is the price of fame. This is his first public test of character and he needs to meet it head on and frankly. A supportive public deserves to know the facts.  They are not interested in prying into his private life. But they are interested in knowing why he is avoiding questions about this matter, if as he implies, there is a simple explanation.

Tiger needs to come forward to separate the truth from the fiction. And to take responsibility.

At Home Alone

For the moment, Tiger’s light isn’t burning bright. Until he explains himself.  Tiger may be a staying home for many a night.

Whether he fears the consequences or not – the truth will set him free.

  1. Tiger continues to make admissions and apologies about his so called (transgressions) via his website only. In so doing ,all of his wealth is buying him very poor advice. But more than anything, I suspect that it is his ego, that is feeling more damaged than either his car or the golf club involved in his extrication?. The sooner he faces his worst fear (the inevitable press conference awaiting him) the sooner he can begin to put this unsavoury business behind him.

    Whether he appreciates it or not, in the eyes of many he has already lost that special something. All he had to do was to tell the truth from the start and all of this extra pain could have been avoided. His agent’s attempt at spin and by writing responses on his website, will not set him free, only the truth can do that. Right now he needs to personally front the media and get it over with before his tournament commitments begin in 2010. He can’t avoid the media forever.

    Youth of delight! come hither
    And see the opening morn,
    Image of Truth new-born.
    Doubt is fled, and clouds of reason,
    Dark disputes and artful teazing.
    Folly is an endless maze;
    Tangled roots perplex her ways;
    How many have fallen there!
    They stumble all night over bones of the dead;
    And feel — they know not what but care;
    And wish to lead others, when they should be led.

  3. With the news today, that woman number 7 in the tryst list of Tiger’s ‘transgressions’, is actually one of America’s leading porn stars, the damage to TW’s reputation is inestimable. How much more concerning his ‘other’ life, needs to be revealed before he fronts the media to stop the bleeding? Whether wife Elin has left him or not, is really not the main story for his fans. The story will always be Tiger.

    What does his future look like? What impact will this unfolding drama have on his game from now on, and how will people react and relate to him in the future? In the meantime El Tigre’s fans can but wait for that new day, when once again it is Tiger’s golfing genius that makes the headlines. At present — that won’t be anytime soon.

  4. Tiger Woods is feeling sorry alright. But clearly, judging by his sorrowful performance at Ponte Vedra – only for himself. When Woods finally decides to return to golf, he will have to face the very same questions he should have answered 3 months ago.

    Had he done so, this story may well have become yesterday’s fish and chip paper by now.

    In a 14 min 48 secs prepared speech, Woods declared that his wife didn’t hit him. If that is true, why didn’t clear up that matter via his website from the outset? Why did he drive so recklessly and out of control down his driveway at 2.30 am?. Where was he going at that unearthly hour and why?.

    This matter is far from over for Woods. Many are fed up by his attempt to spin his way around this matter. For now, whatever it is that Tiger is selling, I am not buying.

    PS: Tiger,you should sack your IMG spin manager. You must speak for yourself if you want to be credible.
