One by one the nine pins fell
Fred Thompson might be a fine actor, but he soon found out how different playing a role in real life is, compared to the imagined. His was an undisciplined, slightly arrogant and embarrassing performance which must have left his supporters looking to check out other TV programs for another hero in future. Rating out of 10 .. 1
Then there were 5
Rudy Giuliani’s performance rated through the roof for arrogance and ignorance. (you don’t get points for that) Talk about believing your own publicity. His departure came as no surprise. There was no way this man with his attitude and personal issues was ever going to get through without crashing. One had the feeling that he felt his good work through 9/11 could possibly end up seeing him rewarded with the Presidency. How dumb. It takes a better CV than that to be a good President. Maybe he was comparing himself with Geo W Bush. Rating out of 10.. 1

Mitt Romney a former Governor of Massachusetts and reputed billionaire seemed to have forgotten that being as rich as Croesus and flaunting his wealth (Croesus didn’t), might come across badly. Particularly with people suffering from losing their homes and jobs. One could easily get the impression Romney was trying to buy the Presidency. His promises to Michigan auto workers about getting their jobs back were base. It revealed how ruthless this man could be. Ridiculing Obama about “change” he said ” That’s what I keep in my pocket”. Later, when he saw how people were reacting to the Obama message of hope and change he quickly adopted the “change” message for his own campaign. It was far too late and transparent. Romney showed he had nothing to offer. No empathy, no common touch and no policies. He campaigned like a carpetbagger. Rating out of 10 .. 2
Then 3
Mike Huckabee comes across as a pleasant man. He used this gift to become a Governor of Arkansas. He has some ability, but was never going to make it in the current climate. After eight years of the Bush Presidency, this time America and the rest of the world is crying out for a special type of leader to be President. A President who can set about restoring American pride and deal with the many serious domestic and international issues confronting the country. The days of strumming a guitar and trying to sell the good ole boy image wont wash – and didn’t for Huckabee. It looks as though he would be amenable to a VP offer on the McCain ticket. Rating out of 10.. 3
Then 2
Ron Paul’s campaign is finished. The only person in America who doesn’t see it is Ron Paul.
At least he has admitted that John McCain has the nomination sewn up. (but he still refuses to concede?) Rating out of 10.. 0
The field
As if emulating the front runners at the Winter Olympics five of the Republican primary candidates went down badly. Some because of knowledge or strategy flaws. Others because their egos were hard to control. And as we know wanting something too much can often result in making bad decisions. As always only one could survive. And the last man standing was – Senator John McCain.
Known for having a short fuse, McCain was short of funds, short on party support and at 72 in August, certainly not the clear favourite, yet one by one, his rivals self destructed. It was no victory for McCain in the usual sense. They fell on their swords by their own doing. With millions of people to choose from, the best the Republicans could produce was the man who failed to beat George W Bush for the nomination in 2000. Perhaps in November 2008 a seriously “Bush averse” America will return a Democrat to the White House.
PS: Senator John McCain and the Australian Steven Bradbury now share a rare common bond. That of being an Accidental hero and The last man standing.
