How to respond
Thinking further about how to respond in Telling Thoughts to the fears raised on the Obama site by the African American lady about Obama and his prospects, I thought I should at least try to reassure her by writing an article which focused on the positive elements of his candicacy, and his qualifications for President. The result was an article titled “The Power of One”.
In other words an Obama profile.
When I had finished writing, it had reinforced my belief that this was an important time and this was a special man for the time. It was a good feeling. Immediately I began a search to see if I could find a video record of some of Barack’s early primary wins, preferably with music backing. Within an hour, lo and behold I found what I had in mind, only better. It was a recommended link on the Obama site which led me to it. When things are going right, some things are just meant to be. It was Akin Salawu’s video production of ”To the Dreamers” The perfect partner for my narrative. After being given Akin’s email address by Bryann another Obama friend and an American, I emailed “The Power of One” text to Akin requesting permission to partner his magnificent video with my work. The highly acclaimed American producer and Obama supporter, happily consented. As you can imagine, I was tickled pink.
One Day in January
I’ll probably never know whether”The Power of One” was ever seen by the African American lady so concerned about Mr Obama’s welfare. All I know is that when I had finished writing the article I was more motivated than ever to see Barack Obama become America’s 44th President. To bear witness to this man placing his hand on the Bible to take the oath of Office in front of the Capitol building in Washington DC on January 20th 2008.
An incredible Journey
Starting with the Iowa primary, it has been a real rollercoaster ride. A full gamut of the emotions in writing and organising through the ups and downs and the intrigue and pitfalls of the Primaries and through to the current stage in the general election. A journey which has also included making more than 370 Obama friends in America and around the world. Writing hundreds of Obama site email posts, handling more than 45,000 Obama group emails, posting motivational notes on Obama threads and researching information from more than 90 Obama groups spread over 50 States.
Managing Telling Thoughts as a one man band has also been a challenge, publishing links to the latest and most up to date news items from media every day and trying to write articles which make some sense in between the gaps. However it is great fun, especially when Barack is doing so well. His supporters are determined to ride the rollercoaster with him - all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Washington DC.
Apart from seeing Barack Obama live up to and even exceed my expectations, the other great thing is to see, is the job Obama supporters are doing as their contribution to their country. The expatriates abroad are also right in there doing their bit. Obama’s reception in Europe came as no surprise to his supporters. They don’t need convincing, even from afar we know he is “the real deal”.
For me, it feels great to be a part of this positive movement for change. Others from around the globe feel exactly the same. That is unique. While ineligible to cast a vote or donate to the campaign, this in no way lessens the excitement and privilege of being able to contribute some time and thoughts to the goal of seeing Senator Obama elected as America’s next President. A man who people feel they can trust, respect and support. After suffering eight years of the Bush/Cheney administration - That would represent real change!
Go Obama -Yes we can!
