I was reminded of the credo of former US Supreme Court Justice Brandeis – “sunshine is the best disinfectant”
In delivering a verdict in the much anticipated impeachment trial of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, the Illinois Senate today voted 59 votes to zero to remove him from the office of Governor of the State, with immediate effect.
In a second vote, also with immediate effect, the State’s most authoritative political body repeated the original voting margin of of 59 votes to zero to ensure that Blagojevich would never again be eligible to hold any public office in the state of Illinois.
As I watched the Senate deliver it’s damning verdict live via C-Span, I was reminded of the credo of former US Supreme Court Justice Brandeis – “sunshine is the best disinfectant”. A philosophy that ex Governor, now plain – Mr Blagojevich, would never support.
In stark contrast, the sun shone brightly today on all members of the Illinois Senate due to their determination to rid their politics of the blight of the political likes of Rodney Blagojevich. In so voting, the Senators of the”Prairie State”, delivered a clear and unequivocal message regarding the level of personal ethics and standard of behaviour it expects from it’s public officials, post Blagojovich.
What goes around surely comes around. A good Illinois State Senator has gone to Washington as President of the United States, and a not so good Illinois State Governor has been sent packing. Considering the credo of Justice Brandeis, it is ironic that should the authorities now proceed and successfully prosecute Rotten Rodney in a court of law, he could spend a long time in an area mostly devoid of sunshine, and an even longer term wallowing in the shadows of his now unbankable reputation.
Well done, The Senators of Illinois
