McCain’s Last Stand
Having witnessed the John McCain’s performance in the general election who other than a person with an agenda such as Limbaugh would give any credence to the words of John McCain? Probably Sarah “Barracuda” Palin. Though having seen him operate politically she has probably shunted his name to the opposite side of the assets ledger by now.
A message for Republican Senators
Please stop to consider the millions of Americans who are about to lose or have already lost their homes, their jobs, many perhaps both, and spare a thought for those who have lost much or all of their retirement savings during the disasterous years of the Bush Presidency. Please focus on America’s problems and be constructive, do not add to them by playing party political games. If that is asking too much, then I suggest you give consideration to your chances of re-election. Your angry constituents undoubtedly will.
Let’s get real about this. Nothing can be accurately predicted in the current climate. At the moment the world’s economies are spiraling downwards at such a rate that even the best financial minds seem unable to agree about the effectiveness of any single strategy in dealing with the growing financial crisis. The world today is more complicated in financial terms than in the 1930’s. Measures which produced results then may not even work this time. But the President and Congress must try to work together. As President Rooseveldt and his depression breaking”new deal” advisers decided – first they would try an idea and if it didn’t work – then they would try something else. Leadership, coordination and cooperation was vital to their eventual success. It always is.
Hope for the Best but Prepare for the Worst
Many remain reluctant to raise the possibility of the crisis degenerating into another great depression for fear of being branded as harbingers of doom and scaremongers. Yet the prospect of another depression hangs in the balance while the die of a serious recession is already cast. Should an event of the scale of the 1930’s disaster arise once more the evidence will be all around us and we will all feel the effects. It will reveal itself as lines of credit become overwhelmed by rapidly growing lines of the unemployed.
Self Regulation Is A Myth Which must End
While American corporate greed and alleged corruption was in the end responsible for the collapse of the financial system, the real culprits and architects of it’s demise were those politicans who over time voted to remove the regulatory rules and provisions thereby opening the floodgates for total abuse of the system. It originated with decisions to either water down or completely eliminate financial regulations which dated back to the Glass Steagall act of the 1930s. To make matters worse the same politicians also failed to ensure proper management oversight and policing of the system by the appropriate financial authorities.
A People’s Champion Just in Time
President Obama was delivered a poisoned chalice as a result of the two term presidency of George W Bush. However as America’s leader I am confident he will do well. By way of contrast history will not deal kindly with the legacy of George W Bush. In the meantime the world at large will pay a terrible price for America’s conduct of both its domestic and international affairs during the Bush Administration years, 2001 – 2009.

I like the idea of letting Rush work from Gitmo. He is such an advocate for keeping it, how wonderful it was for the people imprisoned there. I say, let’s be generous and go ahead and keep Gitmo for Rush. And, perhaps, if the ACLU or others pursue war crimes and criminals, Rush could hold local social get togethers with W and Cheney, Rummy, and Karl. And they’ll appreciate that those in charge are armed to the teeth with big guns.
