In President Obama’s inaugural address he appealed to America to “pick itself up and dust itself off”. Republicans in the meantime appear determined to demonstrate that nothing has changed. Basking in what appears to be a self deluded state occasioned by voting 100% against the Democrats’ stimulus proposals in the house and close to that in the Senate, they believe they have Mr Obama’s measure. Regardless of the state of the economy, foreclosures, education, health care and the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Republican’s clear objective is to make life as difficult as possible for the President.
It begs the question of American voters. Is is more important to be a loyal Republican, Democrat, or whatever else? Or is it a citizen’s duty to be a loyal American first, and vote for the person they actually believe is best qualified to deal with their country’s problems. In these troubled times, surely it is America’s good fortune in Obama, to have a candidate contesting this election, who given the opportunity and time, may prove to be – “The One”.
The obstacle to which I refer is not Obama’s Republican opponent Senator John McCain.I am specifically referring to one of the most insidious elements in US society today. The mainstream American media. A corrosive, politically biased force with attitudes and an agenda capable of pervading and eroding the foundation principles of a democratic nation state.
