The Pathfinder of Australian Pro Golf

The honour of being the first of  The Nudgee Golf Club champions to be profiled in my Diary belongs to the champion of 1931, Norman Von Nida. After turning professional the “Von” was retained by Nudgee as its Club Pro for a time, until he followed his dream to become a full time tournament player. This amazing Aussie who turned 93 in February 2007 can look back with pride on an outstanding career; not only as a player, but also as someone who for decades unselfishly contributed to the development of many top Australian players in the amateur and professional ranks.

Widely acknowledged as the pathfinder of modern professional golf in this country, the Von’s skill and contribution to the game, has earned him the Order of Australia and the respect and admiration of many of the world’s greatest players, including Australia’s five times British Open Champion Peter Thomson, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player, to name a few.

An early inductee into the elite company of Sport Australia’s Hall of Fame and the recipient of many honorary life memberships for his philanthropy, golfing skills and contribution to the game, the ” Von ” truly fits the description of an Australian sporting legend. So much has been written about ” The Von” and his illustrious career, we list but a few of his notable victories, in a career which like so many others at the time, was interrupted by loyal service to the nation in World War ll.
