“The King’s Speech” More than just a Movie

It had been nearly 20 years since I last had to zigzag through rows of people seated in the darkened confines of a movie theatre. That was prior to my discovering a fascinating snippet of the real life story upon which the movie,”The King’s Speech” was based.

One thing most Australians wouldn’t be aware of, is the close relationship that Journalist Laurie Oakes enjoys with Kevin Rudd and his family. Reportedly it began with Rudd’s early days as a University student when he earned money by cleaning Oakes’ residence in Brisbane. After becoming Prime Minister it was Mr Rudd’s wife, Therese Rein, who volunteered to launch Oakes’ book “Power Plays” on Australian Politics in November 2008.

Meanwhile nine years on, Australian troops in constant danger, remain trapped in the corrupt and hellish environment that is Afghanistan, and for what? Both the Government and the Opposition need to tell the Americans that they are wrong about Afghanistan. A good sensible ally would – and should.

The Italian’s game fed on the emotion of a block of Italian fans, including her family, wearing T shirts emblazoned with a message proclaiming “nothing is impossible”. After every winning shot she acknowledged them and was rewarded in return. Adrenalin fixes such as these can raise a player’s level of self belief and performance. The T shirted, message bearing supporters became her focus – theirs was the only acclaim she sought – these were the only voices she wanted to hear. On cue, they delivered – and her growing self confidence was evident.

As the world bears witness to the catastrophic, unabated oil pollution of the Gulf of Mexico currently invading America’s southern coastline, hundreds of thousands of people whose livelihoods are threatened, are beginning to come to terms with the economic and poisonous environmental consequences of this man made calamity and its ability to destroy communities and their chosen way of life. A tragedy caused by the inexpert activities and cavalier attitudes employed by multinational companies involved in mining deep sea oil in the Gulf.

Knowing her own limitations, when the time comes, there is absolutely no chance she will risk her newly discovered financial windfall and bonanza, by attempting to run in 2012.

An Alliance of Corruption

With the near total deregulation of the American financial system came new and often corrupt alliances along with a myriad of dodgy, complicated, corporate financial products and practices. This was the business of finance, American style, by the year 2000. Many of the shady deals and flawed enterprises which resulted, were the product of a deregulated embryo of this disaster, emerging as it has, to become the first international financial virus of the 21st century.
