U.S. voter registration swells

21 states report a 65% increase in rolls compared with the 1st quarter of 2004

Voter excitement, always up before a presidential election, is pushing registrations through the roof so far this year — with more than 3.5 million people signing up, according to an Associated Press survey.

Overall, the survey found more than one in 66 adult Americans registered to vote in the first three months of the year. And in the 21 states that could provide comparable data, new registrations soared about 65% from the same three months in the 2004 campaign.

“This could change the face of American politics for decades to come,” said Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, predicting permanent gains for her party. Republicans say such surges come and go over the longer term.

Even if some new voters drop off, the numbers are striking.  Link to complete Freep story.
